CrossFit Mental Game Skill #7: Emotional Control

Your heart is racing, you’re sweating, going to the toilet several times, your muscles feel weird and tensed and maybe you feel all numb – have you ever tried that?

We all know the feeling of being nervous. Its a natural thing that the body and mind react to specific situations, if they are perceived as threatening in some way. Many athletes who perform well during training or practice can suffer from performance anxiety on game day, or the feeling of frustration and anger during the competition. If feelings of nervousness, anxiety, anger or fear interfere with your performance, learning to use a few tips from sports psychology may help you get your emotional states under control and reduce game day nerves.

In order for you to learn how to control your emotional state in challenging situations, first step is alway to get to know what you are thinking in this specific situation – what is causing this emotional state? What kind of thoughts are spinning around your head? Read more about the first step here

Even though we are not in control of other peoples emotional state, emotional control is not only a matter of managing our own emotions, but also dealing with other people’s contagious moods, which is why being able to inoculate yourself from other people’s negativity and instead keeping yourself open to catching their positive moods is a good thing to learn!
